A GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR KURDISTAN

Regular readers will know that I've been a long time proponent of the partition of Iraq and creation of an independent Kurdish state in the north. This morning, Drudge links to this article in the Times of London, in which a name as substantial as James Baker is now being associated with the idea of partitioning the country into the three zones that should have been separate states as far back as the end of the Ottoman empire.

The only way the U.S. is going to "get out" of Iraq is for Iraq to cease to exist. It can't be maintained by us or anyone else, including the Iraqis. Iraq is a "fake country," an accidental artifact of Anglo-French imperial finagling in the aftermath of WWI. There is no logic to the courty's present borders. Fighting and dying and continuing to spend American treasure to maintain those artificial borders is the main cause of the current mess. There is no constituency for them -- so change them and move on!
