REPUBLICAN MELT-DOWN

It's hard not to watch -- like driving by the scene of a terrible car crash and being unable to avert your gaze from the carnage -- as the Republican party engages in an orgy of self-destruction. The Foley teenie-boy sex scandal is bad and going to get worse as the investigation into that creepazoid's slithering pursuit of Congressional pages picks up steam. Foley's corruption is just an extreme and personally perverted example of the porcine behavior of the Congress that the Republican party has dominated for 13 years now. Meanwhile, Bob Woodward lays the smack-down on my girl Condi, reporting that she had a clearer warning than previously known in the summer of 2001 about impending al Qaida attacks on the U.S. The Democrats don't have to be anything but non-Republicans to gain control of both houses of Congress in a month. Meanwhile, failure to articulate any meaningful energy policy, no coherent war policy and an increasingly Nixonian focus on press leaks make the current "leadership" of the United States look like ... well words fail me. No amount of coffee this morning is going to conjure a vocabulary sufficient to express my disgust with these people.

This is truly the gang that can't shoot straight. Five years ago, they had every opportunity that people could have to do amazing good in America and the world. But in that time, the Democrats haven't engaged in the kind of reform that could generate a meaningful alternative. When they get into power, the clock will simply be set back to 1993, before they lost control of Congress. The Democrat politics of balkanized interest-group pandering will return to replace the sleazoid corruption of the Republican coalition between the Bible and the boardroom.

Marius/Sulla; Pompey/Caeser ... I think I'll cast Joe Lieberman in the role of Cicero.
